FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
The 7th Annual Conference of the Asian Society of Ichthyologists 2024
Penang, 28 - 29 May 2024

After a four-year hiatus related to COVID-19, a meeting of the Asian Society of Ichthyologists (ASI) will be held at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia on 28-29 May 2024. The meeting will include two days of presentations (talks and posters).

Previous conferences were held in Penang in 2014, Guilin in 2015, Taipei in 2016, Ho Chi Minh City in 2017, Nanning in 2018, and Aceh in 2019. Attendees at each conference have numbered between 150 and 250.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we welcome ichthyologists, fisheries biologists, and anyone interested in Asian fishes to attend the ASIIC2024 Conference, which is jointly organized by the Asian Society of Ichthyologists, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu with support from Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), Indonesia and IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. The conference will provide an excellent opportunity to share latest research results, develop collaborations, and promote research on Asian fishes.

The theme for this year’s meeting is
“Exploring Species Diversity and Resilience of Asian Fishes in a Changing Environment”

The conference will include oral presentations, posters, and a special session/symposium on protecting the freshwater fishes of Southeast Asia. This special session will be organized by ASI. The scientific sub-themes for this conference are:

i) Taxonomy and species checklist
ii) DNA barcoding and metabarcoding
iii) Population genetics, evolution and biogeography
iv) Invasive and alien species
v) Sustainable aquaculture and fisheries
vi) Public outreach, citizen science, and education

Submitted papers will be considered for publication in a Scopus-indexed journal/proceedings after the peer review process (publication details and publication fees to be announced).

The conference will be preceded by a pre-conference workshop on “Introduction to eDNA metabarcoding” on the 27th May 2024.
